Dear Frustrated Food Growing Enthusiast,
You probably ended up visiting this website because you have hit a wall with your vegetable garden. Chances are you are facing seemingly insurmountable problems that see you extremely frustrated with the lack of results you see from your vegetable growing efforts.
Perhaps you can’t control the pests in your garden, see your veggies die the slow death of draught despite your best efforts with the watering can, or simply feel at a loss with your planting schedule.
I honestly feel for you. As a horticulturist strategist, I am consistently faced with the same questions to people’s worst gardening problems.
But first – I’d like to ask you…

Was it to save money? Was it to have access to fresh produce, just when you need it for your cooking? Was it to grow varieties that aren’t available in the supermarkets? Was it to eliminate the waste from throwing out herbs and veg after they go limp and soggy in the botttom of the fridge? Was it to help save the environment from the “food miles” that food has to travel before it reaches us?
Or, deep down, have you always wanted to grow your own vegetables and herbs (just like your parents / grandparents enjoyed on the farm) but didn’t think it was possible in a small, suburban garden. What’s more, you’ve never really known how to do it?
Anyway, please let me take a moment to introduce myself.

My name is David Borthwick and I’ve been involved in agriculture all my life.
I am passionate about growing food. But it didn’t always come easy to me. Having grown up in the country I was well aware of the challenges of working with nature. For a long time I muddled around growing a few things here and there but more often than not the crops would get wiped out by kangaroos, grasshoppers or a dry spell, just before they were ready to harvest.
It wasn’t till I was in my mid 20′s that I would eat broccoli, I had tried the regular stuff in the supermarket which was weeks old by the time it was transported to our area and it was revolting! Then one night we went next door to the neighbours for dinner and when it was served I thought oh no, I’m going to have to somehow eat that broccoli on the plate. But from the first bite it tasted beautiful, it had been home grown and picked that afternoon. I couldn’t believe the difference!
It was then and there that I decided I had to master the art of growing food. Later I moved to the city and as a professional horticulturist, I started helping others find a way to grow the fresh food they needed in the small areas that they had.
I have thoroughly loved helping build vegetable gardens for schools, set up herb gardens for aroma therapy in nursing homes, planted fruit trees high up in apartment buildings, grown vegetables and replanted them on to movie sets, been asked to speak at many garden clubs, set up displays at home and garden expos to help educate people how they can start their own edible garden, conducted testing and research on many garden products and achieved Certified Nursery Professional status in 2008.
For a long time I have helped hobbyists with their vegetable gardening problems via email. Tirelessly I have answered questions to help people like you grow a range of fruit and vegetables and offered solutions that ended resulting in a fantastic harvest, time and time again.
One day I realised there was a common thread to these questions. It seems most hobby vegetable gardeners face the same problems, the same issues when trying to grow a healthy crop.
I then realised if I was to write a comprehensive guide that would address all of these problems I could help a lot more people. That day was a defining moment in my business because it was the day Vegetable Garden Doctor was born.
